Our Story

1912 first built
In 1912, construction was completed on the new Monclova School, replacing the one room schoolhouse that was formerly on the corner of Lose and Monclova Roads. The opening of the new school was hailed as a triumph for this small community. With its lovely architecture and grand style, the Monclova School would be home to area students for over 60 years, until 1974 when the new elementary school was built and the Monclova School was closed. This once proud building was left to deteriorate for nearly 25 years.

1997 set for demolition1

In 1997, through efforts of the newly formed Monclova Historical Foundation, along with support from the Monclova Township Trustees and the community, the drive began to renovate the old school. What looked to be a crumbling old school was deemed to be structurally sound and well worth saving.

The question was then raised, what to do with this old landmark? A community center for people of all ages seemed to be the perfect answer. Thus began an intensive drive to renovate and preserve the much loved building. Through private donations and fund-raising events, money was raised to renovate the entire East Wing and the main floor of the West Wing.

Today, many activities are already taking place in the Community Center. Banquet and meeting facilities are available for rent to the general public for wedding receptions, company Christmas parties, baby showers, 1st communion celebrations, birthday parties, meetings, workshops, seminars, and more. Children’s and youth activities include sign language classes, art classes, Step by Step Dance Studio, and Boy and Girl Scout meetings. Senior citizens are served through the Monclova-Anthony Wayne Area Senior Center. Come take a Yoga class through Still Water’s Yoga, have your family memories preserved with Tracy Disbrow Photography, or take a Zumba class.
